How to know what to choose?
Choosing Your Towbar Mechanical Style
The right towbar style depends entirely on your vehicle's aesthetics, parking sensors, and what you plan to tow.
Fixed Flange Towbars
- What it is: The traditional UK standard where the towball bolts onto a flat faceplate using two or four heavy-duty bolts.
- Best for: Heavy commercial towing, commercial vans, and drivers using bolt-on accessories like bumper guards or specialized cycle carriers.
- Consideration: The permanent plate remains visible and can sometimes trigger rear parking sensors when you are not towing.
Fixed Swan Neck Towbars
- What it is: A sleeker, single piece of curved steel where the neck and hitch ball are integrated into one unit.
- Best for: Modern passenger cars and SUVs. It looks neater and its slender profile is much less likely to interfere with your vehicle's parking sensors.
- Consideration: You cannot use bolt-on accessories like flange-mounted bike racks or bumper shields.
Detachable Towbars
- What it is: Available in both flange and swan neck styles, this system allows you to completely remove the neck mechanism with a quick-release lock when you aren't towing.
- Best for: Drivers who want to maintain their car's original factory look, protect their shins when loading the boot, and avoid parking sensor interference entirely.
- Consideration: Slightly higher initial cost, and you must remember to store the neck safely in your boot.
Choosing Towing Electrics
Towing electrics are critical for road safety. They transmit your vehicle’s lighting signals to your trailer, caravan, or cycle carrier.
7-Pin Lighting Electrics (12N)
- Best for: Standard trailers, horseboxes, and towbar-mounted bike racks.
- Function: Powers the mandatory legal road lights, including your indicators, brake lights, and fog lights. It does not power internal caravan appliances.
13-Pin European Electrics
- Best for: Modern caravans (built after 2008) and advanced cycle carriers with reversing lights.
- Function: A single, twist-locking plug that powers all legal road lights plus internal 12V caravan electronics (like keeping your fridge cold and charging the leisure battery while you drive).
Universal Wiring vs. Vehicle-Specific Wiring
When TJ Towbars fits your electrics, we highly recommend Vehicle-Specific Wiring (Dedicated Kits). Unlike universal wiring which taps blindly into your rear lights, a dedicated kit integrates directly into your vehicle’s computer system. This automatically activates vital safety features while towing, such as Trailer Stability Control (TSC), alters your braking/suspension profiles, and deactivates your rear parking sensors when a trailer is connected.
